What the 16/17 season has in store

The ceaseless search for works beyond the canon of the standard repertoire is what makes the Vienna RSO’s programmes so special.

Together with our partners we have compiled a varied programme in which you will discover a large number of new works featuring many (world) premieres and first productions. Among those with whom we created the programme are the Vienna RSO’s guest conductors. And so we look forward to meeting James Feddeck, Jakub Hrůša and Lorenzo Viotti (winner of last year’s Young Conductors Award Salzburg) and many others, along with soloists including Rafał Blechacz, Gidon Kremer and Fazil Say and the singers Vesselina Kasarova and Anne Schwanewilms.

The heart of the RSO Vienna’s concerts are on the one hand our subscription cycles in the Vienna Musikverein and Konzerthaus, and on the other opera productions at the Theater an der Wien; in 2016/2017 these are Hamlet with Michael Boder on the rostrum and Peer Gynt with Leo Hussein. There’ll be plenty of festival appearances, too. We’ll be performing at the Salzburg Festival again this season, and at the festivals of new music, musikprotokoll Graz and Wien Modern. For the first time, the Vienna RSO has been invited to the RadiRo Festival in Bucharest. The popular concert galas “Hollywood in Vienna” and “Christmas in Vienna”, the Beethoven Competition, recordings for film and CD plus a tour of China at New Year round off our concert activities. The children’s concerts “Concertino” and “Klassik-Hits” are an invitation to discover music, our percussion workshops an invitation to join in it.

We hope that you are curious enough about the 2016/17 season to attend several of the concerts of the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. It goes without saying that you can hear every Austrian concert of the Vienna RSO on the radio, on Ö1, and on the station’s homepage afterwards. And if you’d like to experience the orchestra at close quarters, you can’t do better than become a “Friend of the RSO”: two types of membership are available, silver and gold.

We look forward to seeing you at one of our concerts.
Best wishes,

Cornelius Meister and Christoph Becher
